El Monumento al Campesino · Memorial to the Peasants of Lanzarote · Sculpture of César Manrique in the Municipality of San Bartolomé
The Monumento al Campesino erected by the artist César Manrique in the year 1986 is a memorial in honour of the hard working peasant farmers of Lanzarote. lt is a rough sculpture in white building blocks made into a fantasy figure of a Lanzarote farmer and his camel. The blocks are actually empty containers formerly used to store water in. The great white sculpture with its height of 15 meters stands out on a hill against the blue sky also resisting against the heavy winds of Lanzarote. The monument is built on the east entrance to the "La Geria" from the village San Bartolomé and is visible from far away. (Location see map below)
Right next to the Monumento an old manor house is built in the typical style of that time with a lovely interior courtyard. lt is now a countryside museum. There are little handcrafts and artist's shops as well as a shoe maker, a gift shop, wine shop, basket maker and other interesting things. It is worth to make a walkabout and to visit the historical exhibitions of Lanzarote, the country life as well as the handcrafts and artist's workshops.
A "tapas-bar" you will find in the courtyard to sit in the sun andenjoy some little things to eat - "tapas" - and a cool drink. An excellent restaurant is also to be found in the complex of buildings. A huge subterraneous hall with a domed roof and underground passages in lava stone with little water falls is available for festivities, conferences and concerts. You can walk through to the museum and the shops...
